Cultivating a Culture of Support: Evidence and Insights from Our Program Evaluation Report
Each year, Hope Squad conducts surveys with our student Members to understand the impact of our programming. We’re proud to share some of the results in our 2022-2023 Program Evaluation Report. This report assesses the design, implementation, and outcomes of our programming to provide actionable insights and evidence-based conclusions related to the effectiveness of Hope Squad programming.
Hope Squad’s foundational approach is rooted in the evidence that students are more likely to share suicidal thoughts with a peer than an adult (Kalafat, 1992). Designed to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to intentionally connect with and educate their peers to reduce mental health stigma, Hope Squad Programming cultivates a supportive school environment where mental health is prioritized for the benefit of all.
Based on pre- and post-survey responses from Members during the 2022-2023 academic year, the Hope Squad Program analysis reveals:
- Statistically significant improvements in Suicide Prevention Knowledge & Skills and Gatekeeper Knowledge among Secondary Members reflect increased understanding and skills gained from Hope Squad participation.
- A statistically significant increase in Referral Efficacy among Secondary Members and maintained Bullying Resistance among Elementary Members, showcasing heightened confidence in guiding peers toward trusted adults and resources.
- Statistically significant improvements in Peer Support Willingness and Engagement among Secondary Members, suggesting a stronger culture of support within the school community.
- An increase in Compassion Satisfaction and a statistically significant decrease in Compassion Fatigue among Secondary Members indicates they are provided with adequate support in their roles.
- Stability in reported Stress Levels and Self-Care Awareness among Elementary Members, affirming the program’s success in equipping them with the ability to maintain a balanced emotional state through adequate coping mechanisms and support.
The results of this program evaluation continue to demonstrate that Hope Squads have a positive impact on the schools they serve, as well as on Hope Squad Members themselves. The program’s effectiveness is evident in its expansion, the positive outcomes among Members, and its contribution to fostering a culture of openness and support within schools. Moving forward, the program aims to continue its growth and serve as a beacon of hope and action against the challenge of youth suicide.
