Our Suicide Prevention Model

Infographic showing Hope Squad's suicide prevention model, which includes the HOPE Approach Member Gatekeeper Lesson, Community Engagement, Peer-to-Peer Approach, and Program Strands surrounding Core Competencies.

Our suicide prevention model connects gatekeeper training, psychoeducation, a peer-to-peer approach, and community engagement to reduce the risk of suicide. Core suicide prevention competencies are woven throughout each of these elements to build the knowledge and skills that empower students to connect peers to trusted adults.

Our distinct Gatekeeper Lesson, called the HOPE Approach, is intentionally designed to equip individuals with foundational skills for recognizing and responding to mental health concerns. These skills are reinforced in the broader, multi-year Hope Squad Program Strands to deepen students' understanding over time.

I have had three children participate in Hope Squad. Other parents always ask me if they are too young or they feel too much pressure. I always tell them absolutely not. You can never be too young to learn how to be aware of those around you.

My biggest takeaway from Hope Squad over the past few years is the realization that you never truly know what any one person may be going through in their life and the immense impact a single person who truly cares can make.

I imagine this as emotional CPR. My job isn’t necessarily to be able to heal someone all by myself, but just keep them okay until they can get more professional help.

I have never seen a program change the culture of our schools the way Hope Squads has. The power of peer-to-peer and education about mental illness has opened doors and saved lives.

We can put boots on the ground, eyes in the hallways, ears out there in the room. I said, ‘Sign me up, I absolutely want to do it. This is where I need to be.’

Tony Cooper

Hope Squad Advisor

Hope Squad brought me closer to people, made me see things differently, and taught me not to judge others as you never know what they might be going through.
